Company History

Greg Lucas first entered the construction trade over forty years ago, in 1976. He became a licensed contractor in 1983, and spent years leading commercial and residential projects within Sonoma County as Lucas Construction.

After spending over twenty years as a general contractor, Greg began Blackstone Homes in 1999. His focus shifted to developing and building new home communities within Sonoma County. The most recent Blackstone Homes project is Alexander Valley View: seven single-level, semi-custom homes in Cloverdale. Through both Lucas Construction and Blackstone Homes, Greg has built hundreds of homes in Sonoma County to date.

Our lead project manager, Mike Scott, brings over 35 years of home building experience to our team. His attention to detail and thoroughness in cost estimating will ensure that all parties enter into the project with a clear understanding of cost constraints.

The design/build advantage

Greg Lucas, owner of Blackstone Homes, and architect Kathy Austin have worked together for over twenty years, collaborating on the planning, designing and building of over 80 homes. Their joint projects include:

  • Alexander Valley View Estates - 7 home development in Cloverdale (currently under construction).
  • Marlow Woods – 32 home development in Santa Rosa.
  • Esposti Meadows – 25 homes in Santa Rosa.
  • Randall Lane – 27 homes in Santa Rosa.

These projects exemplify the proven success of Greg and Kathy’s “design/build” approach to project delivery. This process is characterized by close collaboration and communication between the architect and contractor at all stages of development. The approach differs from the “Design/Bid/Build” method, in which the architect and contractor are generally unassociated; the architect designs the home, while the execution and build out of the project is left to the lowest bidder.

According to a comparison conducted by the Department of Architectural Engineering at Penn State University, when the design/build approach was employed over the design/bid/build approach, projects resulted in averages of:

  • 12% improvement in construction speed
  • 30% improvement in project delivery speed
  • 13% reduction in overall cost
  • A greater chance of finishing within budget

What this means for you:

  • Changes to the design are less likely to cause construction delays.
  • Scheduling can be expedited, as certain aspects of construction can be performed prior to the design being finalized.
  • Both the architect and contractor have proven experience navigating the zoning and permitting regulations together within the city of Santa Rosa.
  • The property owner does not need to act as the mediator between the architect and contractor, allowing for a more hands-off role.
  • The architect and contractor work cohesively with a collaborative vision and shared goal of serving the client.

We are constantly seeking ways to make our process and approach more efficient, and deliver the highest quality product on time and in budget.
